She was born Ankjen Jochems Bruinewoud (= Brown wood, forest) in March 1842 in the dairy farmers village of Oldelamer, located the southern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, daughter of Jochem Idzes Bruinewoud (39 years old, laborer) and Margje Reinders Bakker.

In April 1893 Hankje (51), her husband Johannes Groen (53, farmer), six children, and her daughter Margje's husband Johannes van der Tuin, emigrated from the dairy farmers village Oldetrijne in south Friesland to the Platte area, Charles Mix County, located in the southeastern part of South Dakota, not far away from the Missouri River. On April 7, 1893 they arrived on the s.s. Veendam at the port of New York, Ellis Island.

In June 1900 Hankje (58 years old, born in March 1842 in the Netherlands, mother of 7 living children), her husband Johannes Groen (61, September 1839, Netherlands, farmer), their children Jochem (24, June 1876, Netherlands, farm laborer), Feike (20, Mei 1880, Netherlands, farm laborer) and Reinder (17, Netherlands, October 1882, farm laborer) were living on a rented farm in Signal Township, which borders the River Missouri, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. They all immigrated in 1893.

In April 1910 Hankje (68) and her husband Johannes A Groen (70) were living in their own house in Platte Township, Charles Mix County, South Dakota.

In January 1920 Hattie (78) and her husband John Groen (80) were still living in their own house in Platte Township, Charles Mix County, South Dakota.

Hankje died in January 1923 at the age of 80 years in Platte Colony, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. Her widower Johannes Groen died there too, in May 1925 at the age of 85 years.
