Carl E. Lee was born Koshkonong Prairie, near Stoughton, Wisconsin. He was the second of nine children of Thorvald and Matilda Hansdotter Lee. In 1879 the family moved to Norma Township, North Dakota. He was among the first students to enroll at the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo in 1891. He did his graduate work at the University of Wisconsin. While teaching at the University of Wisconsin he helped in the development of making butter from sweet cream. He was associate professor of dairying at Wisconsin and later Assistant Dairy and Food Commissioner for the state of Wisconsin. He was a charter member of the American Dairy Science Association. In retirement he raised a herd of prized Brown Swiss cows.
In 1903 he married Gertrude May Lang of Monticello, Iowa. They had three children, Howard J. Lee, Dorothy Lee Russell and Herbert C. Lee. Gertrude died in 1928. In 1950 he married Elizabeth Jones of Mauston, Wisconsin.
