Anna was the eighth child of Thorvald and Mathilda Lee, born on the Lee farm in Norma Township. She attended grade school in the Lee country school and high school at Oak Grove Seminary, a private Lutheran girls' school in Fargo, North Dakota. After graduating in 1909, she attended Valley City Normal School. She had her share of farm chores and spent many hours hunting with her brothers. She survived many accidents, but injured her back which caused her pain throughout her life. Before getting married, she taught parochial school in the summer and a country grade school for two years. She also worked as a clerk in the Barnes County court house. In 1916 she married Lars Hogstad, whose first wife had died in 1911. Lars and Anna had three daughters. Their first home was in Nome, where Lars worked as a bank cashier. In 1922 they moved to Edgeley where Lars worked as a state bank examiner. After a few years, they moved to Valley City and then to Niagara, North Dakota. In 1928 Lars suffered the first of five strokes. A year later they returned to Valley City where Anna lived the remainder of her life. After Lars suffered a life-ending stroke in 1945, Anna continued working at the court house. She enjoyed twelve years of retirement, traveling and being active in church and clubs. When she was 84, she learned that she had cancer. She died at the St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, Minnesota.
