Alfred was the youngest child of Thorvald and Mathilda Lee. He attended grade school adjacent to the family farm in Norma Township. When not doing chores, he enjoyed playing with his sister, Anna, who was two years older. He especially enjoyed hunting. He went to North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo for three years, working part-time in a men's clothing store to help defray expenses. He left college to take a sales job with John Deere. He then worked as a sales representative for Standard Oil. In 1915 he married Prudence Mark and they had one daughter, Rosemary. They lived variously in Valley City and Lisbon, North Dakota, and in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. In 1931 Alfred bought the family farm from his brother Carl and operated it for a few years. Earlier he had bought the Henry Lee farm from the estate and operated it with hired help while retaining his non-farm job. He sold it in 1924 to his brother Anton. While operating the home farm, he periodically took jobs with farm equipment companies to supplement his living. In 1950 he sold the home farm and moved with Prudence to Santa Monica, California. He enjoyed retirement and living near his daughter and grandchildren. He visited the stock exchange almost daily. He had a heart attack and died while driving home from the stock exchange.
