On July 3, 1861, Philip Whitener enlisted in Company F, 11th Regiment, Gilmer Co, GA, CSA, along with brother Davidson Whitener. He was wounded on Oct 2, 1862 & admitted to the Confederate Hospital in Culpepper, VA. The next day he was sent to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA where he was treated for gun shot wounds in leg & foot. He returned to his regiment in Dec 1862 and was on furlough through Jan 1863. In early July 1863 he was captured at Gettysburg & became a POW at Point Lookout, MD. He was paroled from Point Lookout in Feb 1865 & allowed to return home. Shortly thereafter, he was killed by a renegade gang that had roamed the hills of north Georgia during the Civil War. (His brother-in-law, Joel Elbert Searcy, was killed about the same time by the same gang.) Philip Whitener's burial site is unknown, but is believed to have been on Whitener property in the Boardtown Community of Gilmer County, or in one of the nearby church cemeteries - either Mt. Pleasant Baptist (old Buckhorn), or Salem Baptist. His wife Levina (married 1852) was still living in Gilmer Co in the 1880 census. Philip & Levina had five children:
1. Henry H. Whitener, b 1853. Since Henry is not listed in census after 1860, it is assumed he died. No burial location found.
2. William Everett Whitener - see link below
3. Laura Whitener, b 1859. Laura is age 21 and still living with her mother & 2 younger siblings in 1880 census. No marriage record found.
4. David Beauregard Whitener - see link below
5. Octavia Rose Whitener, b 1865. Married John William Deal, Aug 7, 1884, Gilmer Co, GA; Bk 3, Pg 231. They had seven children. Several years ago, a grand-daughter found Octavia "Tavey" Deal buried in Rhea Co, TN; however, we have been unable to get her linked to her father. (See Memorial #58202902)

No legible tombstones have been found for Levina Whitener and/or daughter Laura Whitener. They may have died and are buried somewhere in Gilmer. It is also possible that both left Gilmer Co with David Beauregard Whitener and either died on the trip west, or perhaps made it to Califoria and are buried there.
