Information concerning the marriages & children of John D. Wilfong Whitener was taken (with permission) from the book, "Through Four Generations: Heinrich Weidner 1717-1792 and Catharina Mull Weidner 1733-1804" by Anne Williams McAllister, published in 1992 after more than 15 years of extensive research by a group of dedicated researchers, assisted by numerous "local" researchers throughout the USA. A second volume of this book was published in 1996.

The oldest son of Heinrich & Catharina Weidner was Daniel Weidner/Whitener who married Mary Wilfong ca 1783. The oldest son of Daniel & Mary Wilfong Whitener was John D. Wilfong Whitener. According to the above book, ALL of the sons of Daniel Whitener used the middle initial of "D" to distinguish them from the grandsons of Michael Weidner who lived in the same area.

John D. Wilfong Whitener was married three times ...

Wife #1 (married ca 1803): Magdalena "Molly" Mull, d/o John & Mary Ann Anthony Mull. They were divorced in 1816. Molly Mull Whitener died in 1853 and was probably buried in the Weidner-Robinson Cemetery with her parents. Their six children were:
1. Elizabeth Whitener m. Henry Naugle
2. Mary Whitener m. Absolum Miller
3. Anna Whitener m. George John Wilkie
4. Polly Whitener (memorial 18264704) married Jacob Miller (memorial 18264652) on May 11, 1830, in Lincoln Co, NC. Jacob & Polly Whitener Miller moved to Gilmer Co, GA shortly after the birth of twin sons in 1844. Jacob Miller was the brother of Mary Margaret "Polly" Miller, the second wife of John D. Wilfong Whitener. Needless to say, Whitener-Miller marriages continued ... descendants are often surprised to learn they are descended TWICE from John D. Wilfong Whitener (via his first marriage AND via his third marriages).
5. Jacob Whitener m. Keziah Landrum (memorial 14405913)
6. Anthony Whitener

Wife #2 (married 1817): Mary Margaret "Polly" Miller, d/o Philip & Margaret Helderman Miller. Polly Miller Whitener died after 1880 and was buried at Bollinger's Chapel in Burke Co, NC. Their eight chldren were:
1. John Wilfong Whitener, Jr. m (1) Sarah Lee (2) Permetha Harrison
2. Catherine M. Whitener m. Michael Bollinger
3. Sarah Salome Whitener m. Henry Settlemyer
4. Logan Henry Whitener m. Ann C. Naugle
5. Rhoda Salina Whitener m. Jacob Alonzo Bollinger
6. Wesley Jones Whitener (memorial 49964596) m. Nancy Caroline Rogers (memorial 54967919)
7. Hiram Anthony Whitener m. Harriett Boovey
8. William Jethro Whitener m. Anna Hawn

Wife #3 (married after 1827): Margaretha (Margaret) Dellinger, d/o John & Barbara Fisher Dellinger of Burke Co, NC. For names of their eight children, use the link to Margaretha; burial sites of most are unknown.

In 1839, John & Margaret Dellinger Whitener, with their eight children, moved from old Lincoln Co (the portion that is now Catawba Co) to Gilmer Co, GA. Gilmer County was established in 1832 in the old Cherokee Indian Nation. They settled in the Boardtown District of Gilmer County. Their children married into "neighboring families" in the Boardtown District or the adjoining Cherry Log District.

Court records indicate that John D. Wilfong Whitener died in August of 1855. Margaret Dellinger Whitener died between 1860 & 1870. Although their burial sites have not been located, it is believed they were buried on their own property (a family tradition) or in unidentified graves at one of the nearby churches ... Mount Pleasant Baptist (aka Buckhorn or Old Buckhorn Baptist), established in 1841; or possibly Salem Baptist; however, Salem Baptist was not established until ca 1855. Both cemeteries have numerous unidentified graves marked only with rocks; many of those rocks have also been replaced in more recent years with small concrete markers.

Note: Based on above-referenced research, the named parents and grand-parents of John D. Wilfong Whitener are buried at the old Robinson-Weidner Cemetery in what is now Catawba Co, NC. HOWEVER, multiple findagrave memorials for John's parents & grandparents have been created at several different cemeteries. I prefer to NOT add to the confusion by linking John to any of the multiple memorials.
