Henry was born in the Duchy of Brunswick, Amt. Uslar, Germany 2/17/1841. He immigrated to the United States with his mother, Johanna Friederike (Groschen) Bote (1800-1882) in late 1849 or early 1850 to Cincinnati, Ohio. Two sisters also immigrated with them: Christine Wilhelmine Bote (1822-1904) and Johanna Wilhelmine Bote (1829-1903). Christine married Louis Armbrecht and Johanna married Henry Horstmann, both men had immigrated to the area earlier. Henry migrated with Henry Horstmann and Wilhelmina, along with Mother Johanna to Marion County, Iowa in 1850. Christine and Louis Armbrecht remained in Ohio, later moving to Ripley County, Indiana. Henry grew up in the farming community called "Germantown" and began farming early on. On April 1, 1866, he married Sophia Caroline Doris Schroeder (1847-1921). They would have 12 children, 11 of them grew to adulthood.
