Services set for Mrs. Ola Wren
Funeral services for Mrs. Ola Spencer Wren will be held Thursday, March 4 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Minden. Officiating will be Rev. Mike McLaurin, assisted by Rev. Mark Strickland. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Wren died Monday, March 1, at 11 p.m. at Town and Country Nursing Home, following a lengthy illness. She was 99.
She was a native of the old Ward 1 Evergreen community, where she was born in a log cabin. She lived in Minden all her life.
In the 1930s, Mrs. Wren volunteered her time to sign up members for Claiborne Electric Cooperative, and later served two terms on Claiborne Electric's board of directors. She was elected by a unanimous vote as president of that body for the year 1940, and was the first and only woman to serve in that position.
Because of her interest, Mrs. Wren was instrumental in helping many of the rural homes in Webster and Claiborne parishes obtain electricity.
Mrs. Wren was co-founder of Wren's Dairy, which was unrivaled in the area. It continued to thrive until it merged with Sanitary Dairy in 1951.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she served in the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marcus Wren Sr. and one daughter, Elizabeth Powell Wren.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. W. Spencer Wren of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and Marcus Wren Jr. of Minden; one daughter, Marcia W. Gater of Minden; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
