GREEN COUNTY KENTUCKY OBITUARY – 1922
One of our oldest citizens Avelette H. Calhoon, died in his home in Greensburg, KY January 16, 1922, of heart failure. He was in his usual health and ate his usual breakfast but about 9 o'clock he fell from his chair and passed away in a few moments. Avelette H. Calhoon was born January 24, 1842, was married to Miss Bettie Hagan March 10, 1864 and lived happily with her until March 22, 1918, when she passed away very suddenly. They raised a large family of children, 3 boys and 4 girls, 36 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren all of whom survive him. One boy died in infancy. Mr. Calhoon early in life professed religion and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Temperance and lived a consistent Christian life up to his death. He served as a soldier during the civil war, was in the Army 18 months. He was severely wounded in a skirmish at Cy Hutchinsons in Hart County, KY, in 1861 and was afterward discharged on account of wounds. He was a man of very high honor and great integrity and one of the foremost citizens of our county. He scorned to do a little act. He conducted a saddlers shop for years in Greensburg at which time he was known by nearly everyone in the county. He was of a genial sociable nature and liked by every one in the county. He lived out a long, profitable and useful life. May all of the loved ones left behind try to emulate his virtues and follow his good example and when called home as he was, may we be prepared to meet him in the happy land over there. - supplied by Francie Ede
