Please note: Michael Kegler commonly went by Michael, but his family nickname Fred is listed on the death record. Also, the record spelled his surname as Keyler rather than Kegler. Finally, his birth date was listed as February 19, but was recorded as May 15 on his headstone. February 19 appears to be correct, but only 1824 has been recorded above to maintain consistency with the headstone. Access this grave along the short roadway traveling east to west in the center of the cemetery, contiguous to section 16 of the main cemetery map. Michael and Karolina Kegler are in Lot 7 of this section.

Michael Kegler was born in the village of Kasekow, kr. Randow, Pomerania. He worked as a farmhand in the nearby village of Petershagen. He later moved within the same landkreis to the village of Woltersdorf, where he married Karolina Brauer on 18 Nov 1847.

Together, they had ten children. The birth records for these children can be found in Woltersdorf on Archion.com. They include:

August Karl Friedrich Kegler (1846-1870) -- Died in the Franco-Prussian War
Wilhelmina Louise Kegler, m. Johann Bockenhäuser (1848-1926) -- Stayed in Germany
Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Kegler (1850-1861) -- Died of typhoid
Caroline Sophia Charlotte Kegler, m. Johann Gottfried Flater (1853-1907)
Friedrich Wilhelm Kegler, m. Wilhelmine Baegen (1855-1939)
Christine Louise Dorothea Kegler, m. Wilhelm Splittgerber (1859-1942)
Ferdinand Johan August Kegler, m. Wilhelmine Peterich (1861-1941)
Auguste Caroline Wilhelmine (Gusta) Kegler (1863-1872) -- Crushed by tree
Louise Wilhelmine Friedrike Kegler, m. Frank Meyer (1866-1956)
Maria Caroline Otillie (Mary) Kegler, m. Louis Nickel (1870-1947)

Michael was a farmhand and wife Karolina was a homemaker. Their children received a basic education and were confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Their son August was called to service during the Franco-Prussian War. Sadly, he was killed on 6 August 1870 during the Campaign of Sedan. August's military record provides documentation regarding the location of the Kegler family home, but it does not give clues to his final resting place. One other son, Friedrich, also served in the military, joining the ranks of the Cavalry when he came of age.

In 1881, Michael immigrated to the U.S. with his wife and four of his children (Friedrich, Ferdinand, Louise and Mary), sailing aboard the 'Braunschweig' from Bremen, Germany. They arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, on 13 Oct 1881, removing soon thereafter to Wisconsin. Daughters Caroline Kegler Flater and Christine Kegler Splittgerber, along with their husbands and children, had sailed to America earlier that year, arriving in April 1881 aboard the 'Grimsby'.

In addition to August, who was killed during the Franco-Prussian War, Michael and Karolina lost two more children prior to their immigration. Son Carl died of typhoid and daughter Auguste (Gusta) was crushed by a tree. Daughter Wilhelmina married and remained in Germany until her death.

Several members of the extended Kegler family (siblings, cousins and/or nieces and nephews of Michael and Karolina) also immigrated from the Woltersdorf area to Lake Mills and surrounding areas in Wisconsin. The exact relationship of these extended relatives is currently unproven.
