-----------

August Kegler was born to Karolina Brauer in Woltersdorf, kr. Randow, Pomerania, Prussia. This village was absorbed into Kreis Greifenhagen when Kreis Randow was dissolved on 15 October 1939. Most of the former Kreis Randow is now in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, but a small section around Gartz, including Woltersdorf, is now in Brandenburg.

August was born prior to Karolina's marriage, and it is unknown whether he was the biological or adopted son of Michael Kegler. As a child, August received a basic education and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. As a youth, August joined his father and older siblings working full-time as a farmer until he was called to service as a Musketeer during the Franco-Prussian War.

Sadly, August was severely wounded on 6 August 1870 during the Battle of Wörth (Campaign of Sedan) and died on 24 August 1870. August's name appears on the casualty list for the 2nd Company, 46th Regiment (Verluste List No. 22, p. 137). It is presumed that he was buried on or near the battlefield along with his other fallen comrades. This casualty record also provides documentation regarding the location of the Kegler family home at the time August entered service.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: The current-day municipality of Casekow [ka:ze ko:] was created on 31 December 2002, by merging the formerly independent communities of Kasekow, Blumberg, Luckow-Petershagen, Wartin and Woltersdorf.
