THE HISTORY OF THE STAUFFER FAMILY

The ship, the Pink Plaisance, arrived in America in Sept. of 1732 from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, with passengers from the Palatinate region of Germany, among these passengers were two Stauffers, Daniel and Jacob, the first known Stauffers to arrive in America. In the years to come more ships arrived carrying passengers named Stauffer. As with the first ship many came from Rotterdam. The early German speaking people, fleeing southern Germany and the surrounding areas because of religious persecution, traveled down the Rhine River to the Netherlands and on to the port city of Rotterdam.

When the first Stauffer family member arrived in America is unknown at this time. The history of the Stauffer family that has been documented thus far starts with David Stauffer who was born in PA in 1811. Sometime around 1832 David married Elizabeth Rowland (Roland, Rohland) and moved to Ashland Co., OH. To this union was born 10 children, 3 daughters and 7 sons. The first son, being Samuel, who was born in 1833, the next was Absalom, born in 1838. He was followed by William, born in 1840. Next to come was Joseph, born in 1842, followed by Solomon (the founder of our branch of the family), born in 1846. Daniel was born in 1852 and the last was David, born in 1855.

We next pick up the Stauffer family in 1880 where the census, taken that year, shows Elizabeth Stauffer, the mother, had moved to Milan Twp, Allen Co., IN where the 2 youngest sons, Daniel and David, are living with her. There is reason to believe that her husband, David, had accompanied his wife but had died just prior to the 1880 census. Absalom, the oldest son was also living in Milan Twp. The census lists Absalom as married and having 4 children. Just when Absalom arrived here is unknown. The census lists the last 3 children as having been born in IN. If they were all born in Allen Co. it would mean Absalom had been living there since 1866. Solomon had moved to Elkhart Co. IN where he married Amanda Dillman and the first 2 of their children were born. In 1883, after the census was taken, Emma (who was the mother of Wilbur Brososky, and Will S. Rothgeb, the next in line in our family history) was born. It was shortly after the birth of Emma that Solomon and his family relocated to Allen Co. IN.

By 1883 or shortly afterwards we find 4 of the 7 brothers living in Milan Twp. William, it appears, might have stayed in Milton Twp, Ashland Co. OH. The whereabouts of Samuel and Joseph are unknown at this time and it cannot be ruled out that one or both of these brothers did not take up residence in Allen Co. As far as is known these 4 brothers, Absalom, who had 3 sons, Solomon had 5 sons,David none, and Daniel 1 that we know of (maybe 4), for a total of 9 and probably 13 boys. After 4 or 5 more generations at 4 boys apiece one can see that we have a lot of Stauffers living in that area, which we do. As far as is known these 4 brothers are the founders of the Stauffers living in the Harlan area of IN today.

Bowers Cemetery, Saint Jospeh Township, Allen County, Indiana. The cemetery is located at 9101 Stelhorn Road, on the northeast corner of Stellhorn and Wheelock Roads. This cemetery is in use. The cemetery is mowed and well cared for.
