Bess was born in Russellville, Kentucky, on the 30th of August, 1915. She was the fifth daughter of May Long and Lon Matherly who married in 1904.

May Long, died in October, less than two months after Bess was born. Three years later, in 1918, Lon married Corinna James. Over the next five years, Bess had three "new" siblings in addition to her four sisters from May Long.

Bess married John Edwin Martin, son of Molly Frazer and John Henry Martin in Russellville, KY. They had two sons.

Bess was a high school math teacher, an avid genealogist, and a local activist in her community for many civic and philanthropic causes. She was a devoted mother, wife and later in life, caretaker, to both her husband and sister-in-law, Sallie Mae Martin Gorrell.
