"Jimmy" Matherly was the first-born son of Lon and Corinna (James) Matherly, born in Penrod, Muhlenberg Co, KY on 21 Nov 1919. He married Ruby Leona Johnson on 10 Oct 1942 in Russellville, KY. They had two sons. They divorced in October of 1985.

Jimmy joined the Army Air Corp on the 20 Nov 1945 in Louisville KY. He was a Staff Sergeant and was with the 9th AF, 50th Fighter Group (P-47's) out of Southampton prior to D-Day.

He flew small planes, and had about 2000 flying hours when he was discharged.  After D-Day, he was in Normandy by June 8, where he was part of a team assigned to recovering and/or destroying Norden bombsights from B-17s that had been shot down on both sides of the battle line.

He told about being under sniper fire during this period, particularly near Carentan, France. He was in continental Europe for most of his remaining time, Belgium for awhile, later Germany including being part of the occupying forces.

He left for Europe when his son was three days old, and returned when he was three years old.

Jimmy retired from Olin-Mathieson Chemical Corporation in 1978. He had worked there for over 30 years.
