Edith Kathleen Matherly Velie was born in 1911 to parents, May Long and Lon Matherly. When she was three years old, her mother died two months after giving birth to her sixth child. Three years after the death of her mother, May, Lon married Corinna James. Kathleen was raised by her step-mother, Corinna and her father Lon Matherly in Muhlenburg, KY.
Kathleen left home in her late teens and moved to Chicago where she worked and lived with her older sister. While in Chicago, she met Byron Velie and married him about 1940. Byron joined the army in 1943, reaching the rank of 1st LT in WWII.
Byron and Kathleen lived in New Haven and Ansonia, Connecticut while he worked for a paper co. They moved to Honolulu, HA in about 1967, where Kathleen died in 1976. Byron died about 11 years later in 1987.
