May was the daughter of Bethenia "Bessie" Wyatt and William Jackson Long. She married Lon Matherly in 1904 and had five girls. The last girl, Bessie Carolyn was named after May's mother. Two months after Bess was born her mother died of a cerebral thrombosis.

Mildred M. Matherly born 19 Jan. 1905, first married Dr. Ralph Warmack in 1929. They had two children. They divorced in 1950 and in 1953, she married William Cox.. Mildred died the 3 April, 1993 in Hennepin, Minn.
Martha Louise Matherly born 6 Apr 1906, married Dr. Harry Johnstone Fisher, in 1935 in Chicago. IL They had one son and lived the majority of their married life in Hartford, and New Haven, Conn. Louise died 9 June, 1969.
Edith Catherine (Kathleen) Matherly born 15 June 1911 married Byron Velie in 1940. They had one daughter. On the 17 June 1976, Kathleen died in Honolulu, HA
JoNell Matherly born 30 Sept 1913, married Henry Charles Phillips in 1930 in Chicago, IL. They had one son. JoNell and Charles divorced and she married Floyd Alfred Bogen in 1941. They had one daughter, Linda, “Lynn” Nilsson Laikin who was born in 1943 and died in 2010. Jo Nell died in Florida.
