OBITUARY - REV. GEORGE TURNER THOMAS (by Jesse Cecil Thomas)

Rev. George Turner Thomas was born in Nona, Obion County, TN, on February 13, 1855 and died at his home near Oney, OK, Saturday, June 18, 1932 at 8:00 PM, aged 77 years, 4 months and 5 days.
In his boyhood days he moved with his family from Nona to Jasper, TX, where he remained until he was a young man. He was married to Miss Evelyn Meyer on January 17, 1880. To this union four children were born. He was preceded in
death by his wife, October 29, 1897, and also by two of his children.
Later he moved to Graham, Texas, where he married Miss Anna Hamilton on February 22, 1899. To this union three children were born. He moved to Oney, OK in the
year 1904 and had resided there ever since that time.
He was ordained a Minister of the Christian Church in 1896 and had been an active Evangelist and Pastor of a large number of churches during the past thirty-six years, until his health failed him. He was a man with a wonderful
personality, making friends wherever he went. He had over 4,000 baptisms to his credit. Many of the homes throughout this country can reflect back to their wedding day when Brother Thomas performed the ceremony that united them in
marriage.
He had been active in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for many years. His many friends expressed their sympathy by the large number that attended the final rites. There was a large representation of his former churches where he
had worked in his active past: from Gotebo, Cloud Chief and others.
He is survived by his wife, Anna, and five children, Norman, Jesse, Meda Sigle of Oney, Mrs. Ruby Gould and Mrs. Lola Lee of Ft. Cobb. Sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild and many friends and neighbors who mourn the loss of one who has given his life in such a wonderful service and so worthy a cause. Also, three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 19, 1932 at 3:00 pm at the Central Christian Church of Oney and was conducted by C.W. Rassure and Rev. Wilburn Chism.
