Greenfield Soldier Is Killer In Auto-Train Crash Monday
M. Sgt. Roby Whitley, 33, U. S. Army, was killed instantly when a Baltimore & Ohio freight train struck his auto at a crossing on a township road, approximately two miles west of Greenfield, Monday between 6:45 and 6:50 A.M.
Sgt. Whitley was thrown from the car and the wreckage of the car was carried quite a distance from the crossing.
O. F. Stevison, Chillicothe, engineer on the train, made the following statement to Dr. J. Martin Byers, county coroner:
"I noticed a car running slow between 6:45 and 6:50 A.M. I thought it was going across the tracks and I blew the whistle and rang the bell. The car was traveling about five miles per hour and rolled on the track and just sat there. The train was about three telephone spaces from the crossing and at two telephone lengths I observed that the car was not moving and put on the emergency stop."
Dr. Byers said that Whitley leaves his wife, Isabel, and two children of Columbus, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Holt Whitley of Greenfield.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
