BAXTER SPRINGS, KANSAS: Elmer Glenn Sturgis, age 70, passed away at 8:30 pm, Sunday, February 6, 2011 at St John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, MO.

He was born June 7, 1940 in Galena, KS. His parents were Elmer and Iva (Frazier) (sic) [Chance] Sturgis.

He graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1957.

He worked as a carpenter doing construction in various cities for a number of years, returning to the Joplin MO area in 1976.

As a young man, he boxed in the Golden Gloves program. He was a multi-talented individual.

He was last married to Anita Rose Stewart in 1994 at Miami, OK. She passed away Dec. 23, 2009.

Surviving is one son, William Owen Sturgis, Joplin, MO; two daughters Glenda Kay Black (husband, Brett), Joplin, MO and Savannah Marie Stewart-Sturgis, Riverton, KS; 2 brothers, Jay Sturgis (wife, Margrette) Joplin, MO, and Terry Sturgis (wife, Janice) Baxter Springs, KS; 6 grandchildren, Justin Black, Brandon Sturgis, Amanda Sturgis, Amberly Ann Youngblood, Heaven Leigh Flowers, and Brittany Shanelle Flowers; and 2 great-grandchildren, Braiden Black and Alexander Joel Vanderpool.

In addition to his parents and his wife, one granddaughter, April Dawn Black preceded him in death.

Glenn was taken for cremation under the care of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS

The family will hold a memorial service at 3:00 pm, Saturday, February 12, 2011 at First Baptist Church, Galena, KS.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family in Glenn's honor.

GALENA, Kan. - Iva L. "Peggy" Hamilton, 74, Fort Scott, formerly of Galena, died at 4:16 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a long illness.

Mrs. Hamilton was born April 27, 1921, at Alva, Okla. She lived in Fort Scott for 15 years, moving from Galena. She was a seamstress at Miller Manufacturing, Joplin, for 30 years.

She married William E. Sturgis in November 1938 in Joplin. He died in November 1968.

She married Marion Hamilton in 1977 at Columbus. He died in 1984.

Survivors include three sons, Jay Sturgis, Joplin, Glenn Sturgis, Galena, and Terry Sturgis, Baxter Springs; two sisters, June Sturgis, Baxter Springs, and Avis Dickenson, Harrisburg, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gandy Cemetery, Galena route 2. Roy Derfelt will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.
