Dolores Lela SCOTT, a.k.a. Dolores Lela Scotti. a.k.a. Lela May Campbell. I found her married last name spelled as Scott and Scotti on records. Her mother's maiden name has been found spelled Steel and Steele.

Dolores Lela's birth name was Lela May Campbell. She was the 3rd child born to John Sanford Campbell & Arlene Geraldine (Steel) Campbell. Lela was born on a neighbor's farm, 5 miles east of Arden, Stevens County, Washington. Her mother gave birth to a total of 8 children, two daughters were stillborn, and one daughter, Norma LaVaughn, died before age 1 year. One of the stillborn daughters was given the name Little Eva. Her siblings, who reached the age of majority, were: Vernon Wayne; Franklin Merle; Claude Henry; Evelyn Irene.

It is not know when, or for what reason, Lela changed her first name to Dolores and made Lela her middle name. It happened sometime after the 1930 census. The name change was possibly when she married Charles Edward Scott, and maybe in California.

Lela spent her early years in the Northeastern part of Washington, Stevens County, and in Spokane County. She started school in Spokane. About 1921 the family moved to The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon. She continued school in The Dalles and then went to Portland where she attended the St. Rose Commercial [Industrial] school, operated by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, 1926-1927, and again in 1930. She took several business classes. In 1928 she was listed as a secretary for the County Agricultural Agt. On the 1930 census, she was living with her mother, 3 brothers and a sister, in The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon. Her occupation was listed as a stenographer for a lumber company.

Sometime after 1930, Lela married Charles E. Scotti. The date and place isn't known at this time, but it was probably either in California or Oregon. More than likely, the marriage happened in or around Oakland, Alameda County, California about 1938-1941.

Lela died when she was hit by an automobile. She was on her way to work, walking to the bus in the morning. The accident happened just a few feet from where she lived at Route 1, on Gregory Lane. At the time of her death, she was a secretary for the Benecia Arsenal, and hadn't been working there too long.

The story of the accident was in the Contra Costa Gazette, 27 Oct. and 30 Oct. 1942. Excerpts: The person driving the car that struck and killed Lela was Norman C. Miller, age 42, who lived at the end of Gregory Lane, Rt 1 Box 89, worked at the Mt. Diablo quicksilver mine. Mrs. Scott, Dolores Lila, age 31, lived with her husband, Charles E. Scott, on Gregory Lane, Rt 1, Box 690, Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California.

There was a Coroner's Inquest. Information about the accident was printed in the Contra Costa Gazette, October 27, 1942, titled "Walk To Work Ends In Tragedy." The same newspaper, on October 30th, printed an article titled "Services Are Held For Mrs. C.E. Scott, Car Accident Victim, Walnut Creek, Oct. 30." The funeral service was held at Guy & Blackwell Mortuary. Besides her husband, she was survived by her mother, Mrs. Arlene G. Campbell, of Oregon; three brothers and a sister, all of Oregon. Lela and Eddie didn't have any children.

NOTE: Arlene, Lela's mother, kept a little baby book she made herself for Lela. It gave the information about the birth: Lela May Campbell born to John S, and Arline G, Campbell Nov. 9, 1910, at 5:50 A.M. Place of birth five miles east of Arden, Wash. on David Baughman farm, Weight 9 pounds, nurse Mrs. Phillip Ward.
