Claude Henry CAMPBELL was born 14 June 1914 in Tonasket, Okanogan County, Washington to John Sanford Campbell and Arlene Geraldine (Steele) Campbell. Claude was the 5th of 8 children born to this couple.

As a young boy, Claude lived with his parents and siblings in several Northeastern counties of Washington. Most of the time was spent in Spokane and around the area of Colville. The 1920 Federal census for Spokane, Washington, shows Claude at age 5, born in Washington, living with his parents and 4 siblings. A short while after this census, probably about 1921, the family moved to The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon, where Claude remained with his mother until she died in November 1961. He then went to live with his brother, Merle and family, in Clackamas County, Oregon.

Claude loved the outdoor life, and as a young man was very active and an avid hunter and fisherman. He provided a variety of meat and fish to his mother's dinner table. Some of these provisions were duck, Canadian goose, pheasant, quail, salmon, and sturgeon. Later in life, he contracted Muscular Dystrophy, walked with the aid of a cane, and in the 1950's he drove an old Hudson sedan.

On 28 April 1935 he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps, for a short time. He worked at Camp Canyon Creek, Camp Sisters and Camp Sherman, all in Oregon. While in the CCC, he worked as a laborer on road construction and worked Beetle Control. He was discharged from the CCC on 15 August 1935 and given transportation from Camp Canyon Creek to The Dalles, Oregon.

Prior to enlisting in the CCC, Claude had graduated from grammar School, had two years of High School, in The Dalles, and was a Cherry Orchard worker for 4 years.

On 1 August 1939, in The Dalles, Claude enlisted in the U. S. Army as a Private in Co. G. 186th Infantry. His Honorable Discharge papers, which were filed at the Wasco County Clerk's office in The Dalles, showed he completed 1 year 3 months and 4 days in the Army. He was inducted into active military service on 16 September 1940. The papers also show he was 5 feet 9 1/4 inches in height, had blue eyes, brown hair and dark complexion. The reason for discharge shows "CDD 3rd Indorsement Hq. Barnes General Hospital, 10 Dec. 1941", and were signed at Barnes General Hospital, Vancouver, Washington on 19 December 1941, by C. S. Lyster, Major, M.C. Adjutant.

My uncle Claude never married and, never had children, and never left the Pacific Northwest. In his later years, he didn't talk much. He usually left the talking and story telling to other family members. You had to draw him out with questions, before he would offer much in the way of conversation. Not being able to get around very well, because of his Muscular Dystrophy, he spent most of his later years listening to the radio and playing his phonograph records.
