Americus "Mack" Dakin was the last of 8 children born to John and Susan Anna (Laird) Dakin. 4 of his siblings were born in Ohio and the rest were born in Iowa, as was he.

Mack's Dakin ancestors first came to this country in the mid 1600's from England, settling in Massachusetts. Succeding generations moved west, arriving in Ohio in the early 1800's, then moving on to Iowa. The oldest Dakin ancestor of which I have record is Thomas Dakin, born May of 1624 in Derbyshire, England and died Oct 21, 1709 in Concordd, Middlesex, Massachusetts. There is a genealogy book on the Dakins which gives an extensive and detailed enumeration of this family.

His Laird ancestors on his mother's side, were Scottish. His mother, in fact, was born in Scotland. Her parents immigrated to the U.S. in about 1816. They had originally lived in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, Scotland, a small agricultural town that never had more than about 300 residents, of which the Laird families were longtime residents. For some reason, Mack's grandparents left that area and moved to the more populace Aberdeenshire on the East coast, in which they were married, had a few children and then immigrated to the U.S. through Nova Scotia.

Americus was called "Mack" or "Marcus" by his friends and relations. He always signed his name as "M.C. Dakin."

On March 9, 1871 at State Center Twp., Marshall County, Iowa, Americus married Mary Cary, a native of Canada and daughter of Levi and Mary Cary, also Canadians. Mack worked as a livestock dealer. He and his wife had 5 children, the first two of whom died as toddlers. Their children, all of whom were born in State Center Township, Marshall County, Iowa, were:

Frederick
Bert
William G.
Olive Ann
Susan E.

Americus died on May 3, 1923. 12 days later, his wife followed him to their heavenly reward.
