Funeral for Joe E. Merritt Sr., 53, of P.O. Box 296, Palo Pinto, was 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the White's Mineral Wells Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Sheppard officiated. Burial was in the Sturdivant Cemetery with White's Mineral Wells Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Merritt died 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, near Palo Pinto. He was born Nov. 29, 1934 in Cross Plains, the son of Bennett Davis and Mary Bell Easley Merritt. He was a member of the Noon Lions Club; Odd Fellows; Mineral Wells Jaycees; was an active member of the American Legion; Employee of Johnson Bro. Furniture Co. for two years; established the Advantage Furniture Store in Weatherford; and was a manager of Perry Brothers at one time. He was a ranch manager for Circle Gay Ranch, Palo Pinto for the past 18 months. He served in the National Guard. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors are his wife, Sandra Lee Merritt of Palo Pinto; son, Joe Merritt Jr., US Navy in Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Joanna and Glen Mitchell of Perrin; five brothers, John W. Merritt, Owen Merritt, Ed Merritt, Walter Merritt and Raymond Merritt all of Mineral Wells; four sisters, Nora Turner, Mable Ford, Lee Emma Warren and Juanita Reedy all of Mineral Wells; nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Leggett, Carl Martin, T.R. Gage, James McQuaid, Joe Spears and James Lenamon. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Leggett, John J. Warren, Worth Ford and Jay Turner. - obituary
