George was born aboard ship in New York Harbor upon its arrival from Ireland. The family then moved to Chagrin Falls, Ohio where they lived a few years before moving permanently to Wisconsin. They settled first in Black Wolf near Oshkosh, Winnebago County, and later in Waupaca County. He married Elma Elizabeth on July 4, 1882 in Royalton, Waupaca County, WI. The newlyweds soon afterwards moved to Raymond and eventually settled near Carpenter, Clark County, South Dakota, where they spent the rest of their lives. To their union were born seven children-Sidney Dean, Adabelle Clara, Irwin Francis, George Benjamin, Mae Blanche Evelyn Margaret, and Jerry Bliss.
