Jane McCutchan was the daughter of William "Elder Billy" McCutchen and Jane Finley. She was born in Augusta County, Virginia. She married William McClelland Smiley, the son of John A Smiley, Jr. and Jane McClelland, on 6 Mar 1834 in Augusta County, Virginia. (Wm M Smiley and Jane McCutchen were licensed and married by Revd. Francis McFarland on 6 March 1834 in Augusta Co., Virginia. Per the Augusta Co. Virginia Marriage Register, 1813-1840, Familysearch, 166/351, film # 007578826.)

They had 6 known Smiley children between 1834 and 1850.

On the 1850 Greene Township, Parke Co., Indiana census, I found farmer William M Smiley, 40; other Smileys: JANE, 38; farmer John S, 15; Robert A, 13; William A, 10; James W, 7; Thomas N, 4 and Samuel F, 5/12. William and Jane were born in Virginia and the kids were all born in Indiana.

On the 1870 Greene Township, Parke Co., Indiana census, I found farmer William Smiley, 60, with $7800 in real estate; other Smileys: JANE, 58; additional farmers: James W, 28; Thomas, 23 and Samuel, 20. William and June were born in Virginia and the kids in Indiana.

Five of their children are either buried at Seceder Cemetery or Portland Mills which are next to each other but in different areas. Only son James Wallace, 6 Jun 1844 to 14 Mar 1895 is buried elsewhere (unknown) in Stafford, Stafford County, Kansas.

The Seceder cemetery has listed her maiden name as McCutchan but I note her parents used McCutchen instead. There is confusion over Portland Mills (opened in 1898) and the Seceder Cemetery, since they are side by side and both now maintained by Portland Mills. ("On June 6, 1898 the Portland Mills Cemetery Association was organized and bought five acres of land adjoining the church for a cemetery. In 1912 the trustees of the Associate or Seceder Church deeded to the Portland Mills Cemetery Association the church property, reserving the right to worship there. It is used now only for funerals.").
