This old cemetery has graves from the early eighteen hundreds. It is next to the Portland Mills Cemetery, but is not the same. Portland Mills maintains the cemetery for Seceder.
David Marrero of Portland Mills Cemetery wrote me 1-2011:
"The Seceder cemetery exists as it did when Portland Mills started in 1898. It is just south of the church and has a small sign at the "entrance". It has very few burials after 1898. I would have to look, but I think the most recent burial there was in the 1940's."
"The Portland Mills Association takes care of the Seceder grounds, since the two cemeteries seem to be one anyway, and there is no other group to oversee it."
Hope this helps. David Marrero
The Seceder Cemetery is located in Greene Township, Parke County, Indiana. The cemetery is maintained as a separate entity by the stockholders of the adjacent Portland Mills Cemetery. The Seceder Cemetery is south of the Portland Mills Church building while the Portland Mills Cemetery is to the west of the church building.
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 3, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (April 2007), lists the two cemeteries as a single cemetery with a primary name of Portland Mills Cemetery and an alternate name of Seceder Cemetery
The two cemeteries are also listed under one listing in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-61-58 (Portland Mils / Seceder / Ceceader).
