Elizabeth McCutchen was the daughter of William "Elder Billy" McCutchen and Jane Finley. Rev. Francis McFarland, the minister of Bethel Presbyterian Church, married her to William Strain, on 20th Oct 1831 in Augusta Co., Virginia.

"William Strain and Elizabeth McCutchan were licensed and married by Revd Francis McFarland, on 20 Oct 1831 in Augusta Co., Virginia." Per Familysearch from Film # 007578826, 169/351, original Augusta Co., Virginia Marriage Register, 1813-1840 (sic 1846).

On the 1860 Barnes Mills P.O., Washington, Parke Co., Indiana census, I found farmer Wm Strain, 55 Elizabeth Strain, 54; farmhand Robert Copeland, 22 and Elizabeth McCutchen, 12. The Strains were born in Virginia and the others in Indiana.

On the 1870 Greene, Parke Co., Indiana census, I found farmer Wm Strain, 65 and Elizabeth Strain, 64, both Virginia born.

On the 1880 Greene, Parke Co., Indiana census, I found retired farmer Wm Strain, 75 and wife Elizabeth, 74, both Virginia born. His father was born in Pennsylvania and mother in Ireland.

Her husband William died on 30 Oct 1889 and Elizabeth would make her will shortly afterwards. Elizabeth Strain wrote her will on 8 Nov 1889 and it was admitted to Parke Co., Indiana probate, on 12 May 1890. Will Book 3, p 497-498 (A). She left money and the farm to Martha E McMurtry and Robert W Cooper (had a co-partnership with her husband in running the farm, grain and stock). Elizabeth's estate was probated on 12 May 1890, in Parke Co., Indiana.

Her tall granite monument reads:

ELIZABETH,
Wife Of
Wm. STRAIN,
BORN
Dec. 18, 1806,
DIED
Apr. 21, 1890
and says STRAIN in large block letters at the bottom and it has a cursive "S" at the top of the monument. Her husband William's name, is on the other side of the stone.

William and his wife Elizabeth are both buried at Seceder Cemetery. The Portland Mills Cemetery, next door, maintains it for them but it is not the same cemetery.
