Born in Union Township on May 6, 1852, James Hillary (Hillary) Leak was a son of James Lawrence and Amanda (Buzzard) Leak. He spent his life up until 1909 on the farm where he was born. He married Margaret Catherine (Kate) Leach on October 18, 1883. They were the parents of two children, Roscoe, and Denie, who married George H. Dungan, of Urbana, Illinois.

from the Republican for Nov. 15, 1923:

James Hilary Leak, son of James Lawrence and Amanda (Buzzard) Leak, was born near Lizton, May 6, 1852. His entire life with the exception of one year, which was spent in Nebraska, was lived in and near Lizton.

His father and mother were pioneers and he was ushered into life in a period of great transformation, and has seen many changes and great improvements wrought during his lifetime, and has in a large way contributed of his own energies to this development.

On October 18, 1883, he was married to Margaret Catherine Leach. To this union were born two children, Roscoe, now of near Lizton, and Mrs. Denie Dungan, now of Madison, Wisconsin.

During the ministry of Elder Canfield, on August 9, 1876, he became a member of the Christian church at Lizton, and has been a consistent and faithful supporter of the church until the time of his departure.

As a neighbor and friend he was always found ready to lend his assistance in making community life worth living, quietly and unostentatiously helping where help was needed, being always ready to lend a helping hand whenever called upon to do so.

The most trying period of his life was toward the approach of the end which he lived in total darkness, the only rays of light and cheer in this period were the voices of friends and relatives and an undying hope for the light of another day, through One who is able to restore sight to the blind.

He was ushered out of darkness into light Sunday morning, Nov. 11, at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 5 days, leaving to mourn his departure his companion in life, one son, one daughter and three grandchildren. One sister, Emily Shirley, of Indianapolis, the only survivor of a family of six brothers and four sisters, a large number of relatives and a host of friends.
