Death of George L. Leak - Most of His Life Spent In County of Birth

George L. Leak died suddenly Friday morning of heart disease at his home on East Columbia street. The funeral was Sunday with interment at Lizton. His age was 74 years, one month and 17 days. He was the son of James L. and Amanda Leak and was born near Lizton February 9, 1846. He had six brothers and four sisters. Of these, two brothers, Henry B. and James H., and one sister, Emily M. Shirley, survive. Oct. 3, 1889, he and Alice Hedges were married, she surviving. Most of his life was spent on the farm, the homestead of his father, but failing health compeled him to leave the farm and he engaged in business in Brownsburg and in Indianapolis. Recently he came to Danville. He served as Justice of the Peace for many years in Union township, discharging his duties without fear or favor. In February, 1899, under the pastorate of Alonzo Dunlavy, he united with the Methodist church in Lizton. Later, he was made a trustee in which capacity he served until his death. He always had a great interest in community affairs and stood as an exponent of honesty, law and order. He had a remarkable memory and this gave him such an intelligent hold on past events that often questions of dispute were referred to him for settlement. He could be said to have been self-educated in advance of his years. His love and knowledge of nature were unusual and the greatness of his heart was shown in his kindness to all living things. He cared for and gave to a widowed mother all the devotion of a son and, although having no children of his own, he reared from babyhood a niece, Eldora Nelson, now Mrs. George A. Keeney, and gave to her the love and care of a father. He was guardian for nine nieces and nephews and he was the one to whom the family looked when needing help. He was very happy when he located to Danville. His home life was always ideal and he was prepared to enjoy life at its best among friends and kin. But not for long for in one short month, after a few hours' illness, he was called.
