Rebecca Ellis's father, Mordecia Ellis is named as one of the founding father of New Hope Monthly Meeting in Greene Co., Tennesse, outside of Rheatown. He is buried there with no dates. They were sent to Tennessee from their meeting house in Olley, Berks Co., Pennsylvania
to establish a meeting house there in Greene Co., Tennessee. Her mother was Mary Hutton.

Rebecca married James Cotter from another Quaker family from Ireland. They married at the New Hope Monthly Meeting house in 1788. Both families are named on the documentation.

Rebecca and James had 15 children and most moved from Tennesse to Indiana and on to Missouri.
