He was the son of Peter and Emily (Hightower) Cantrell, born in the old Greenville District, South Carolina.

He married Elizabeth Parris, 1822, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. They were listed on the 1830 census. She is said to have been the daughter of Lewis Parris and his first wife Elizabeth Haney.

They were listed in every census through 1870. In 1873 he prepared his will, which named all of his children. "High" died in 1877 but the will was not filed for probate until 31 Jan 1885.

I give to my wife all the land where I now live. Household furniture that she may need for her use and comfort, one years provisions.
I appoint my son A.H. Cantrell to act as executor or guardian for his mother. At the death or remarriage of my wife, I empower my said son to sell all above named property, both real and personal, at private or public sale and dispose of the proceeds as follows; To Harriet Morris, Lewis Cantrell, Elisee Parris, Nelly Turner deceased three heirs (Nancy, Margaret Gilbert, Florence), Mahala Parris, Ann Crocker deceased two heirs (Mahala Horton and Alfred Crocker), Sarah Parris deceased one heir (Wiley Parris), Abner Cantrell deceased one heir (Clemmy), Rachel Dyer, A.H. Cantrell, Nancy Horton, John Cantrell, Jane Hord.
