He was the son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Cloud) Cantrell. He moved to South Carolina with his dad and other members of the family in the 1790's.

Peter married first in 1798, Emily Hightower, in the Greenville District, SC. He moved his young family to Buncombe county, NC and Emily died there in 1826.

Peter brought his family back to SC and married in 1827, Sarah Hightower, a sister of his first wife. They were on the 1830 and 1840 census for Spartanburg County.

He died intestate about 1848. John Parris (son-in-law) and assignee of William Cantrell petitioned the court for settlement of the estate including 320 acres of real estate.
