Claramon was the daughter of Elhanan Winchester Bates and Mary Polly Douglass. My grandmother told me that Claramon (who was her grandmother) was an Indian. Claramon was probably of Nipmuc descent and other New England Indian. It has been impossible to trace her mother's ancestry.
Claramon, at age 16, married Thomas Cary Lawton (age 31), in September 1848 in Thompson, Connecticut where Claramon's family had been living. It is said that Thomas Lawton wore fine clothes like Bat Masterson and he was a gambler and also traded in liquor. Claramon lived with Thomas for the next 25 years of her life, bearing him over ten children of whom eight survived.
Their children were: Thomas S. Lawton who was married to Maggie a mountain girl from West Virginia, William Lawton who was married to Lucindy Burdick who is said to have been of Narragansett Indian descent, Frederick Charles Lawton who was married to Almira Keach, Ella Mae Lawton who was married to Artemas Drake who had some native ancestry also, Edward Lawton who was married to Rose Guild, George Lawton who married 1) Sadie Fiske and 2) Mary Louise Ross, Della Lawton who was married to Ives Salisbury, and Agnes Lawton who married Norris Robinson.
Thomas deserted his family around 1873. It is said he went to the southern states. Claramon was left with minor children, and the children had to work in the James Brothers Store in Danielson so the family could survive. By 1880, they moved to Scituate, Rhode Island.
Claramon's family chiefly lived between eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. At the end of her life, Claramon lived with her sons George and Edward. Edward had a house and farm and mill at Wilbur Hollow which is now under the reservoir in Scituate. She was buried here in the Salisbury/Cole cemetery as her daughter Della was married to Ives Salisbury. The cemetery is on the north side of the road on Old Plainfield Pike on the Scituate side of the line with Foster.
