Adford Winchester Bates was the youngest child of Mary Polly Douglass and Elhanan Winchester Bates. He was a shoe-maker at the time he entered the Civil War. Later on he worked in the mills.
Adford received a disability discharge from Company D, 11th Infantry Regiment Connecticut on 3 Dec 1862. He married Mary O'Brien the daughter of Irish immigrants on February 25, 1867. They had two sons - George and Herbert (Hurlburt) Smith Bates.
Adford died on June 20, 1879. Here is the information from his death record at the Plainfield Town Clerk's office -- was born in Thompson, lived in Plainfield, was an operative. Parents E.W. Bates & Mary Bates. Father born in Webster; mother born in Blackstone, Mass. Cause of death - valvular disease of the heart. Secondary cause - pneumonia.
His widow, Mary, remarried Timothy Hyland in 1886, and they moved with her sons to live in East Hartford.
