Joseph was the son of Elhanan Winchester Bates and Mary Polly Douglass. He grew up in Thompson, CT and in Plainfield, CT, and spent most of his adult life in Packerville.

Joseph married Sarah J. Phillips on March 30, 1856. They had three surviving children - 1) Jenny Mary who married Franklin Pierce Brown, 2) Arthur Winchester who married Philomena Larrivee Darby, and 3) Walter Joseph who married Mary Josephine Vaughan.

Joseph worked as an operative in the cotton mills at Packerville. In the last years of his life, he farmed in Scotland, CT. Here is the information from his death certificate:

Joseph P. Bates, died in Scotland, Conn. on January 6, 1899. He was married, a farmer, and residing in Scotland. Male, white - 63 years and 10 months. He had been born in Webster, Mass. Father - Elhanan W. Bates, born in Webster, Mass. Mother - Mary Douglas, born in Mass. Joseph died of consumption and heart disease.

Joseph was a frugal man. At the time of his death, he had two savings accounts at banks, totaling $329.06 - information from his probate record in Plainfield Town Clerk's office.
