Here lies James Stephen, June 30, 1758 - Oct. 10, 1832
In connection with his brother-in-law William Wilberforce,
he took a leading part in proceedings which led to the abolition
of the slave trade and colonial slavery
His mother and his first wife, his second wife and two of her children are buried with him in a vault under this stone,
Here lie also the remains of James Stephen,
the father of the above named James Stephen, who was born in Aberdeenshire and died in September 1779, aged 46 years
