Prominent Summerville Couple Enjoy Fifty Years of Married Life and are Happy
Special to the Pittsburg Post
Summerville, PA- December 8, 1903- Fifty years ago today, Hiram Carrier was married to Miss Susan Mauk, in the old house now occupied by his son I. A. Carrier. After the wedding dinner, the bride and groom with a number of other guests, took 32 horses and rode five miles on horseback to another wedding. This couple have lived a happy married life and have raised a prosperous family of twelve. All of whom with their forty-four children and three grandchildren, are helping to celebrate the golden wedding today.
Mr. Carrier began life as a storekeeper in 1846 and continued in that line until 1889 when he retired from the firm of Carrier and Eshelman at this place. He believes in seeing his children prosper while he lives and with that end in view gave each one of them a handsome check at marriage or upon reaching their majority. A few months ago he sold his farm of 200 acres and again gave each of them a check.
Mr. Carrier was born in Summerville in 1826 and has made hundreds of friends through out this part of the state. Mrs. Carrier was born near Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania but soon moved to Jefferson County. Although seventy years old she thinks nothing of walking several miles a day. She is a generous, whole souled woman and is known by all her friends as Aunt Susan.
The children in order of age are: Mrs. T. A. Eshelman; Mrs. E. R. Ditty; I. A. Carrier; and C.E. Carrier all of Summerville; Mrs. Felix Kunselman of Coolspring; W. H. Carrier; Walter Carrier; J. A. Carrier; Mrs. Homer Wick; F. H. Carrier; Mrs. Charles Dickey and Chester Carrier all of Summerville.
