Margaret was a daughter of James and Hannah Mary (Self) Story.

She first married George William Rousey in 1826 in McNairy County, Tennessee. They had one son, Vincent George, in Tennessee, then moved to Morgan County, Illinois. Three more children were born there: Francis; Caroline; and William M. George died about 1837 and was probably buried in Mt. Zion, or "West Greasy" Cemetery, which has been destroyed.

Margaret remarried to Esuriah "Ezra" Poland 6 April 1845 in Morgan County. He was widowed and had two children: Emmeline and Peter. He and Margaret had two more children, James Porter and Elizabeth, together. Ezra died in 1877 and is buried in Gunn Cemetery in Morgan County.

Margaret then moved to Nebraska with some of her children.
