Simon P. Bower Buried with Military Honors

Full military honors were paid S. P. Bower, our last veteran of the Civil War, Saturday pm. Last rites were held in the Union church.

The services was conducted by Rev. R. W. Newell of Wyoming. Uncle Pete enjoyed the values of a simple life.

A male quartet, H. B. Bowman, Judson Harding, H. C. Cady and L. F. Pacey sang "The Way-Side Cross" and "Beautiful City." Mrs. Newell sang "Crossing the Bar."

Invited to attend was Congressman Everett M. Dirkson, and he paid tribute to Mr. Bower as a soldier and citizen. The Legion conducted the ritual services at the cemetery.

Legion color guard and firing squad escorted the casket to the cemetery. A military salute was given by the firing squad and "Taps" was played by Harry Mulvaney.

Rev. Newell read his biography.

Simon Peter Bower was born in Circleville, Piqua County, Ohio, October 31, 1843, and passed away at his home here on Dec. 16, age 93 years, 1 month and 16 days. He was the second of five children (all are deceased) of Daniel and Catherine Stahl Bower.

He came with his father to Illinois at the age of 7 in a covered wagon and they settled on a farm southeast of Oak Hill. Later he purchased the farm from his father, and he lived there for 43 years.

At 16 he enlisted August 4, 1862, to Co. E. 77th Illinois Infantry. He was in the Battle of Vicksburg. At the close of the war he was in the Grand Army in review at Washington before Lincoln. He mustered out July 10, 1865. He was the last living member of the Grand Army Post 177.

On December 28, 1871 he was united in marriage to Martha Hindle of Jubilee township. Five children were born to them. Edward died at birth, James William died at 4 years, and Mrs. Birdie Olive Penn of Oak Hill, Mrs. Suzanna Catherine Coulter of Davenport, Iowa, and Mrs. Laura Walliker of Brimfield survive him.

He was a member of Oak Hill Methodist Episcopal Church and later transferred to Brimfield and then to Union Church of Brimfield.

He made two trips to Colorado with the Wallikers, one in '34 and one in '36. He spoke of these trips often. He loved to joke with Dr. Roberts when he came to visit him.

He is survived by many friends and relatives, a large number of nieces and nephews and 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
