Claude was the son of Socrates Townsend and Mary (Hewitt) Young. His father was a glassblower and so was Claude. In 1880 his family moved to Burleigh, NJ. Claude worked at many different glass work companies throughout south Jersey. He married Ada Cresse from Erma, NJ. They had 4 sons: Theodore 1895, Hobart 1897, Frank 1899 and Amasa 1901. In 1909 Claude was a member of the Glass Blowers Association of the U. S and Canada. He was an apprentist of Branch 110 Cape May Courthouse, NJ. In 1900 they lived in Cold Springs, NJ (next to Courthouse) and in 1910 they still lived there, but in 1920 they moved over to Cumberland Co to work at Wheaton Glass Works in Millville. They lived at 1182 Wheaton Ave. Living with them were Ada's mother, Mary Cresse, a 83 year old widow and Ada's brother, Herbert, who was a timekeeper for Victor Talking Machine Co. They had a two story house and the boys sometimes boarded there with their parents. They could walk out their back door and be at the factory. After he retired he and Ada moved to Petersburg, NJ. Ada died in 1946. Claude was involved with the Cape May Courthouse historical society.
