Andrew was born in Maghadone, Derry County, Ireland and baptism took place in Moneymore, Derry, Ireland. Maghadone is no longer a village. Andrew Armstrong the son of Francis Armstrong had the occupation of a weaver in Ireland per the Registry Book of the Parish of Desertlyn.

Andrew Armstrong served in the Civil War as indicated by GAR marker by his stone and Indian Wars, Co. B, 17th US Infantry. He left three small children (Esther "Hattie", Francis and Elizabeth Armstrong) in Long Island, New York and took his oldest son, William Armstrong with him. His first wife Margaret Lenox Armstrong died September 15, 1865. He served in Richmond, Virginia (where he met his second wife Sarah Willix), was in Texas in 1869, then Kansas and Wyoming. In 1870 he was in the Cheyenne Agency in Dakota Territory. He was discharged at the Cheyenne Agency on November 18, 1870.
Andrew and Sarah's children are Mattie, Andrew, Robert, Joseph, Sarah, Thomas, Benjamin, John, George, Margaret "Ella" and a baby died in infancy.
