Casper is the eldest of nine children of Samuel and Catherine (Ruch) Rihner. He married Edith May Severns on 14 January 1896 in Pleasant Township, Pottawattamie County, IA. The Rihner family made cheese in Switzerland and brought that trade first to Scott County and later to the Hancock, Pottawattamie County area. Casper then took up bee keeping and eventually had more that 400 swarms creating some of the best honey around. He farmed near Hancock until 1923 when he moved to Avoca. His youngest son Francis carried on the bee business in the area.
