Walter is the fourth of nine children of Casper and Edith (Severns) Rihner. He married Agnes Sophie Kohlscheen on 13 August 1921 and she died only six days later on the 19th of August. He then married Ila Grace Jones on 12 July 1926 in Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa. They were the parents of three sons - David, Richard and Tom; however, Thomas died as an infant.
