Samuel was born in Elm, Glarus Canton, Switzerland where the family name was spelled Rhyner. [Elm/Elme, and others, are now called the municipality of Sud Glarus in the canton of Glarus.] Samuel is the son of Verena (Luchsinger) and Michael Rhyner; both were from Elm also. He married Catherine Ruch on 5 April 1868 in Winfield Township, Scott County, Iowa. They were cheese makers in the Alps and brought that trade with them to Iowa. Samuel and Catherine lived in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa for several years before moving to Pleasant Township in Pottawattamie County, Iowa where they lived out the rest of their lives. Their first four children were born in Scott County, Iowa. They had nine children in total; in order they are Casper, Samuel Jr., Verna, Frederick (Fritz), John, Peter, Catherine (Katie), Henry, and Barbara.
