Born to Arthur Christian Ernst and Mary Alice Henson, she was one of four children.
My mother married 1st to my father, James (Jim) Edward Hammons when she was just 16. She met him when he and his brother, Don, were breaking wild horses across the levee from her home in Marysville, CA.
Mom worked 17 years for the San Francisco Examiner in the Circulation Dept.
She was nicknamed "Lassie" by a childhood friend, Edie, because she 'came home'. Her sister, Margaret, called her, 'Baby Duck'. I nicknamed her, 'Granny Goose' when my first child, Dalton, was born.
She loved San Francisco, having moved there during the 2nd World War. The San Francisco 49er's were her team. We had some great times watching them lose at Kezar Stadium. When they won a game every one was ecstatic.
My mother was a very smart lady. She was well read and could answer just about any question or spell and give you a definition of a multitude of words that I looked up trying to stump her.
Sadly, my mother died of cervical cancer after a long, hard battle. She suffered so much it was a relief to let her go. She was only 44 years old.
I remember her as a lady with class. I loved her very much.
