Mary was the daughter of Cordie Alice White and David Thomas Henson. She was the seventh of nine children.
The family came to California, the first time, when she was young. They settled in Los Angeles where they had a grocery store. After the death of a younger sister they returned to MO. but came back to California again and settled in Yuba City, CA. She always said she walked, behind a wagon to CA., twice.
Granny married first to Arthur Christian Ernst on April 2, 1913 in Marysville, Yuba Co., CA. He worked for the local newspaper and had a newspaper dealership. He also ran the taxi for the old Western Hotel. Together they had 4 children, Unnamed son, died at birth, David, called Frank, Margaret and my mother, Alice. At 8 months pregnant, she rode her bike and delivered papers.
She was the grand mother to Barbara, Jeanne, William and Carole Ann. She endured so much pain from her first marriage and divorce. But, she was strong and though her heart was broken, she got through it. Later she was to marry Roy Simpson and I know she was happy with him. They are buried side by side. Together forever.
Granny was a slender, pretty woman who kept an immaculate house. She was, also, every inch a lady. It was white gloves and hat whenever she left the house to shop or visit.
At the end of her life, she was blind suffered from Alzheimers and died in a rest home. It was the final insult to this proud woman.
