SCRANTON - Mrs. Ella Mae Matthews, age 79, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Friday, January 22, 2010 at Beulah Free Will Baptist Church with burial in the Hicks Hill Cemetery, directed by FLOYD FUNERAL HOME, INC. of Olanta.
Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Leo Collins and Sarah McKnight Collins. Mrs. Matthews was a Homemaker and was a member of Beulah Free Will Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.
She was preceded in death by a son; Larry Matthews. One sister; Connie Stokes. Two brothers; B.J. Collins and Bobby Collins.
Surviving are her husband; Pleasant "Bill" Matthews of Scranton. Two daughters; Carolyn Evans of Scranton, Susan (Bradley) Barfield of Lake City. Two sons; Lavon (Linda) Matthews of Coward, Billy (Carol) Matthews of Scranton. Four sisters; Illa Mae Matthews of Scranton, Elmer Jean Floyd of Florence, Mary Alice (James) McCutcheon of Kingstree, Selvia Jean (Johnny) Sims of Turbeville. Six brothers; C.B. (Faye) Collins, Harold Collins, Stanley (Wanda) Collins all of Florence, Colie Collins and Dovelt (Doris) Collins both of Coward, Willard (Chris) Collins of Scranton. Eleven Grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses, doctors and staff at Carolinas Hospital Systems for their dedication and excellent care. Also thank you to Doctor David Rodriguez and Doctor Steve Fowler of Lake City Medical Clinic for many years of care.
