Martha Jane English was born on May 1, 1853, the eldest child of John E. and Cyrena (Fort) English. She married James Pleasant Joseph on Jan. 27, 1870. They were the parents of two daughters, Miranda Jane (Joseph) Broshar and Syrena Ann (Joseph) Campbell. Martha died on Dec. 27, 1877 at the age of 24.

The 1860 Census shows Martha Jane English (age 8, born in Indiana) living in Vernon, Hancock County, Indiana with parents John (age 28) and Sarena (age 27) English and younger sisters Christiana (age 3) and Julia A. (age 11 months). The 1870 Census shows Martha Joseph (age 17) living in Harrison Township, Boone County, Indiana with husband James P. Joseph (age 21).
