Charlotte Nicholls was born July 23rd, 1819 in Green Township, Harrison Co, OH, the 5th daughter of Thomas H. and Rachel Dowden Nicholls. She was married at the age of 20 to Alexander Mitchell Elson on January 31st, 1840 in Wellsburg, Brooke Co, VA. They settled in Brooke County and had 4 children:

Mary Katherine Elson b. Nov 1846
The family moved to Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri by 1870, then to Macon Co, IL by 1880 near where Charlotte's brothers' families, Washington and Albert Nicholls had settled. Charlotte's husband died on December 30th, 1883. Charlotte died March 1st, 1898.
The Decatur Republican - March 1, 1898:
Charlotte Elson - Mrs. Charlotte Elson, the widow of the late Michael Elson, died at 6 o'clock this morning at her home four and one-half miles north of Boody, aged 78 years. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at the residence. The services will be conducted by Rev. A. M. Danely and the burial will be at the Brown cemetery.
