Rachel's mother Mary (Dunn) Dowden was remarried in 1802 to Nathan Pack and they had 4 more children: Eleanor, Levina, Robert, and Nancy Pack. By 1810, her stepfather Nathan had also passed away.
Rachel married Thomas H. Nicholls about 1811, and they first lived in Harrison County, OH before moving to adjacent Jefferson County, settling in Island Creek Township. Rachel's sister Mercy soon after was married Thomas's brother Joseph Nicholls in 1814 in Jefferson County. That family later settled in Trumbull County, Ohio and had a large family.
Rachel and Thomas were the parents of five daughters and three sons: Sarah, Naomi, Cassandra, Irene, Charlotte, Washington, Upton, and Albert Nicholls.
